Volvo inks deal with Uber to develop autonomous cars

It’s been a big week for Volvo Cars here at Driveline Blog. We posted recently about our first drive in a new 2017 Volvo XC60 T5 AWD, and now we’re posting about the recently-announced partnership between Uber and Volvo Cars to work on autonomous vehicles.
The first big test of that new partnership is happening in Pittsburgh this month, with the first of a fleet of modified Volvo XC90s hitting the road soon. Each XC90 will be summoned when a Uber user requests a ride, and each vehicle will be monitored from the front seats by Uber and Volvo engineers who can take over control of the vehicles if needed.
The partnership is expected to eventually produce 100 autonomous vehicles in the Pittsburgh area by the end of the year. You can read more about the partnership via an official Volvo Cars / Uber press release.
