Renault-Nissan alliance becomes world’s largest automaker
In the ongoing battle for the title of world’s largest car maker, the Renault-Nissan alliance is the latest to wear the crown. Renault-Nissan recently reported that it sold 5,268,079 cars for the first half of the year, which helped it move past Volkswagen to earn the crown. Volkswagen sold 5,155,591 vehicles in the same period, while Toyota managed to move 5,129,000 cars in the same timeframe.
In a prepared statement, Renault-Nissan Alliance Chairman and Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn touted the news. “The Alliance has delivered record sales during the first semester of 2017 reaching 5,268,079 vehicles sold. We will continue to leverage our significant economies of scale and global market presence to deliver valuable synergies for our member companies this year, while maintaining a strong technology lineup and offering customers breakthrough electric models,” Ghosn said. “Our enlarged Alliance is well placed to realize its full potential, not only in terms of unit volumes, but also by providing next-generation mobility services to customers around the world.”
Digging a bit deeper into the sale numbers, here are the total sales figures for the first half of 2017 for each the major brands within the alliance:
- Groupe Renault: 1,879,288 vehicles
- Nissan Motor Co. Ltd.: 2,894,488 Â vehicles
- Mitsubishi Motors: 494,303 vehicles
The surge in overall Nissan-Renault alliance sales numbers was undoubtedly helped by the $2.3 billion stake that the alliance took in Mitsubishi in October 2016.
